The Underground Revolution: Restoring What Sustains Us

Imagine damaged landscapes coming back to life from the soil up, starting underground and growing through our communities.

Nature already knows how to restore balance. Beneath our feet, plants and soil microbes form intricate partnerships that detoxify polluted soil, rebuild biodiversity, and regenerate living systems. As we look for solutions to environmental challenges, many scientists and educators are realizing that the answers are often already present in the natural world. The opportunity is learning how to observe these systems and redesign our own practices around them.

At the same time, grassroots advocates are mobilizing communities across California to protect native plants and open spaces.

Join the El Dorado Chapter of the California Native Plant Society (EDCNPS) for an eye-opening conversation about the living systems beneath our feet and the people working to protect them.

International keynote speaker and two-time TEDx presenter Renee Murphy will explore how the systems we see in nature, especially the quiet partnerships between plants and soil microbes, offer powerful models for designing more sustainable landscapes and communities. She will be joined by botanist and digital creator Jessie Dickson (known online as SacramentoFoodForest), whose grassroots conservation work has inspired thousands of young advocates to protect native landscapes.

Together they connect restoration science with real-world action, showing how protecting biodiversity begins both underground and in our communities.
