Over the past several years, we have made great progress controlling invasive plant species that threaten the habitats of the rare and other native species of Pine Hill Preserve. One lesson that we have learned, is that follow-up during the growing season and from year to year is essential for controlling, and sometimes even eliminating invasive species from targeted areas. For example, at one area in the Cameron Park Unit of the Preserve that had large stands of stinkwort (Dittrichia graveolens), we had a good crew of chapter members remove bags and bags of this problematical weed (see the “Plant Page” about this species on the California Invasive Plant Council website: cal-ipc.org). This June, it took only two volunteers just two hours to clear out the stinkwort that grew there this year. We will follow-up this effort with a visit again in July to pull what may have grown since, and once again next year. This should effectively eliminate stinkwort from this area, giving the native plants more opportunity to successfully expand their populations, thereby improving habitat for the native critters and other life as well.

On Thursday, July 30, we will focus on additional areas in the Cameron Park Unit of Pine Hill Preserve that have had stinkwort and other non-native plant invasions. Snacks and cold drinks are provided at the conclusion of the morning’s work.
